1910.212 Machine Guarding: citations, penalties and recently cited employers
Data as of October 5, 2026 · citations issued Oct 5, 2025 to Oct 5, 2026
The general machine guarding rule requires one or more methods of guarding to protect operators and others from hazards such as the point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips, and sparks. Guards must be attached to the machine where possible and must not create hazards themselves. Point-of-operation guarding must prevent any part of the body from entering the danger zone during the operating cycle, fan blades within seven feet of the floor must be guarded, and fixed machines must be anchored to prevent movement.
What the standard requires
- Guard machines to protect against point of operation, nip point, and rotating part hazards
- Guard points of operation so body parts cannot enter the danger zone
- Guard fan blades less than seven feet above the floor
- Anchor fixed machinery to prevent walking or moving
Hazards it addresses
- Amputations
- Crushed hands and fingers
- Lacerations and injuries from flying particles
