1926.1153 Silica in Construction: citations, penalties and recently cited employers
Data as of October 5, 2026 · citations issued Oct 5, 2025 to Oct 5, 2026
This standard protects construction workers from respirable crystalline silica dust created by cutting, grinding, drilling, or crushing concrete, stone, brick, and similar materials. Employers may either fully follow the specified controls in Table 1 for each task or assess exposures and keep them below the 50 micrograms per cubic meter limit. They must also have a written exposure control plan, limit dry sweeping, offer medical exams to certain workers, and train employees.
What the standard requires
- Follow Table 1 controls or assess and limit exposure to 50 micrograms per cubic meter
- Prepare a written exposure control plan and designate a competent person
- Provide respirators when required by Table 1 or exposure levels
- Avoid dry sweeping and compressed air cleaning where feasible alternatives exist
- Offer medical exams to workers required to wear respirators 30 or more days a year
Hazards it addresses
- Silicosis
- Lung cancer
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and kidney disease
Cited in masonry, concrete cutting, countertop installation, and road and tunneling work.
